Verb/adj stem + -기 때문에 · Noun + (이)기 때문에

A more formal way to give a reason, compared to -아/어서 or -(으)니까. It directly translates to 'because of ~-ing' or 'because it is ~'. Preferred in explanations, formal settings, and when the reason needs to sound clear and final.

이야기 속에서는 이렇게 쓰입니다

외국인이기 때문에 안 되는 거예요?
Is it because (we) are foreigners that it doesn't work?

규칙

늦었기 때문에 택시를 탔어요. · 비싸기 때문에 안 샀어요.

외국인이기 때문에 = because (they are) a foreigner
학생이기 때문에 = because (I'm) a student

아/어서 — everyday, sequential
(으)니까 — conversational, giving advice/commands
-기 때문에 — formal, explanatory, written
외국인이라서 / 외국인이니까 / 외국인이기 때문에 — all mean 'because foreigner', different tone

예문

비가 오기 때문에 행사가 취소됐어요.Because it's raining, the event was cancelled.
몸이 아프기 때문에 결석했어요.I was absent because I was sick.
외국인이기 때문에 회원가입이 안 돼요.Because they're foreigners, they can't sign up for membership.
