Verb/adj stem + 아서/어서 → result (same vowel rule as 아요/어요)

-아/어서 has two uses that share the same form. (1) Sequence: "do A, then do B" — the two actions happen one after another with the same subject (학교에 가서 공부해요 = go to school and [then] study). (2) Reason: "because A, B" — a natural cause-and-result connection. Context tells you which one is meant. Important: the REASON use can't be followed by a command or suggestion, but the SEQUENCE use can.

It seems like you caught a cold because you were playing.

규칙

ㅏ/ㅗ stem → 아서 · Other vowels → 어서좋다 → 좋아서 · 가다 → 가서 · 먹다 → 먹어서

① 순서 · Sequence — 'do A, then B'가다 → 가서 타세요 = Go there, then take it
앉다 → 앉아서 먹어요 = Sit down and eat
일어나다 → 일어나서 운동해요 = Wake up and exercise

② 이유 · Reason — [reason] + 아/어서, [result]기분이 좋아서 노래해요. I'm happy, so I'm singing.
배가 고파서 먹었어요. I was hungry, so I ate.

⚠️ Can NOT use with commands or suggestions!피곤해서 쉬어요. ✅ Tired, so I rest.
~~피곤해서 쉬세요!~~ ❌ (use -(으)니까 instead)

배가 아파서 못 먹었어요.I couldn't eat because my stomach hurt.
늦어서 미안해요.I'm sorry for being late.

💡 팁이유 -아/어서 뒤에는 명령문·청유문이 올 수 없어요 · Can't use commands after reason -아/어서. ❌ 바빠서 가세요 (X) → ✅ 바쁘니까 가세요 (O)

-아/어서에는 두 가지 쓰임이 있어요. ① 순서: 두 동작을 순서대로 연결해요 (반대 방향에서 타세요 같은 L1 문장 대신, 가서 타세요 = go there and take it). ② 이유: 원인과 결과를 연결해요 (아래 예문들처럼). 두 쓰임 모두 형태는 똑같아요 — 문맥으로 구별해요! · -아/어서 has two uses: ① sequence (do A, then do B) and ② reason/cause (because A, B). Same form, different context.
